Trip Mar 26-28th, Vail\Leadville Area, Safe Ideas??

Post by drock »

Hi,

March 26th-28th a friend and I are planning to do Mt. Elbert, Mt. Democrat et. al. and another peak TBD. We both have the right gear (snowshoes, crampons, ice axe, avi kit, GPS beacon, etc.), The only thing that bothers me is I could not get into the March AIARE class here in Vail, so the only avalanche prep I will have is a book I'm reading and the practice area up at Two Elks. We will also have a 4-wheel SUV (with extra room for 2-3) to make it as far to the THs as possible.

Is there a better (and safer) plan? I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments.
