Sawatch Conditions?

Post by jeffth5 »

Did anyone hike/climb in the Sawatch today? Did it snow and if so, how much is on the ground? Can anyone post a picture (e.g. from US24 or from a hike today)?

Here are some webcams that I use. Looks like a bit of snow on Elbert with little if any farther south.

Near Harvard... http://www.airportview.net/wx/usa/co/ka ... s=1280x960" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Shavano area... http://www.airportview.net/wx/usa/co/ka ... viewer.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope these help!

was up on Princeton this morning...maybe a centimeter of snow on top, but not bad at all. Looked like Elbert, La Plata, and Massive are getting a few inches that will be staying for a while. Shouldn't be too problematic for you...pack stabilizers or similar just in case, but hiking boots and good reflexes should do you just fine.

"I get scared sometimes—lots of times—but it's not bad. You know? I feel close to myself. When I'm out there at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving, my skin and my fingernails, everything, it's like I'm full of electricity and I'm glowing in the dark—I'm on fire almost—I'm burning away into nothing—but it doesn't matter because I know exactly who I am." from The Things They Carried

What are stabilizers?

Assuming it means micro spikes, crampons, hiking poles, ice axe, anything to help you stay in place.

Makes sense. I figured she was probably talking about trekking poles.

I climbed Mount Elbert yesterday from the South Elbert trailhead. it was overcast and cloudy from the start. There begins to be some snow on the trail at about 12,000 feet but if it stays warm as it is expected, then you probably don't need any traction since it will be slushy and will melt. It was cold and windy yesterday requiring a shell to stay warm most of the climb.

I summited early afternoon in a full on snow storm with whiteout conditions, but then an hour and a half later blue skies came out. There is some decent drifted snow higher up but you can avoid it fairly easily. it was a crazy day with literally four seasons of weather over the course of the climb and descent.

Looking from Emma Burr today, there was zero new snow in the southern Sawatch for as far as I could see. Lots of verglas which should've burned off by now.

I was up at Huron today and there was only one peak I saw with snow. Not sure which one but I'll add a pic.

Within a solid 500 feet or maybe more of the summit was a good amount of verglas. We summited at like 10-10:30ish.

La Plata, looks like snow above 13.8K or so.
