Estimate on 14er finishers?

Post by Mark81-gd »

Was wondering if there's a estimate on how many people have completed all the co. 14ers? I know this is probably a hard figure to find out. In Gerry Roach's 2011 book he figured at that time it was approaching 3000 people. I thought this was a very low number, and would think in the past years, since 2011 that number would of sky rocket!!! Also his figure might be for climbing every peak by it's self with 3000 ft of el. Any thoughts?

Here is the CMC list as of last fall (1573 finishers). There are probably at least twice that many finishers total.

Does that cmc number consider you finishing, if you don't do all individually? Or must you get all 58 with 3000 ft on each one? 58 summits and 58 climbs, no traversing?

Your link isn't working. But I agree - I've always assumed it's about 2500-3000 right now.

I would guess it's close to about 4,000 by now. I know a lot of finishers and only a handful have "reported" to CMC they have finished -- I know I haven't and I wrapped 'em up in 2003.

I guess you have to go to epeakregister.com, select Colorado, then you can click on the societies. Kind of a strange website...

So on this subject I get many different estimates!!! Like I said roaches book estates about 3000 finishers around 2011. One person from cmc said there was over 1500 finishers in the year 2012! What is your estimate?

I am not any type of expert, but I can't believe there were 1500 finishers in a single year. For all of the many, many people who climb 14ers every year, most people don't get beyond a handful of summits in their lifetimes. The tougher ones dissuade many people from becoming finishers. I know there are some humble people out there, but I would imagine most people who finish all 54-58 would report to some recognized record keeping group, such as CMC, that they finished. It might be that there are twice as many as have reported, but I doubt there are 10 times as many.

I'm sure he meant about 1500 who had reported to CMC up to 2012. Way more than that total.

Agree with Sean. It's the nature of a peak bagger to document the feat. I did. My guess is that those who do not are in the minority. That said, many more people are finishing now than when I started in 1988. I see the 1,500 number increasing exponentially.
