Fall fishing in the Sawatch

Post by greenhorn1 »

Anybody been Trout fishing anywhere along the Arkansas River Valley or nearby mountains? Headed out that way later this week and wondering what the conditions are in the area lakes. Would like to do some fishing near Yale or other Collegiate peaks. What kind of bait are you using?

There's a little fly shop in Leadville--can't remember the name but you could do a search--that posts all of the updates on locations and bait all along the Headwaters area.

Upper Ark is great flyfishing. Terrestials are still around (grasshoppers, ants, etc) and stonefly nymphs size about #12. Crowds are gone so you don't have to do the combat fishing.

My dad had a good time fishing when we stayed in Salida in August. He said the folks at ArkAnglers were knowledgeable and helpful. They have a shop in Salida and BV, as well as a website with conditions updates for the area. The homeowner where we rented and staff at Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area also recommended ArkAnglers for specific fishing questions.

If you're throwing bait then red salmon eggs, worms or Power Bait would work in the area lakes. If you're fly fishing in the lakes or on the Ark, head to Ark Anglers.
