Sherman or Elbert?

Post by CoupDeGrace07 »

I'm looking to hike one or the other on May 20th. I would like to get some input from you guys and gals on which one would be safer given the conditions as far as avalanche risk and route choice. I climbed Quandary in February and was hoping to bag another one or two before the majority of the snow disappears.

Elbert via East Ridge, I guess. Sherman requires more careful route finding to stay on the avy-safe path. Forecast wise, both are showing 50-60% precipitation most days and nights between now and then, so I'd expect fresh-ish snow on either. Also, both forecasts mention 'thunder'. So, maybe neither?

Personally I would go straight up the face of Mt. Sheridan as that part is always windblown and free of any snow. Much more interesting summit then Sherman and you bypass the often encountered cornice between the 2. Then if you REALLY want to do Sherman, follow the ridge to Sherman as you'll then be above that cornice. 2 peaks for basically the same elevation gain you would have to do on Elbert.
