58 14ers or 59 14ers--Which Peak is Added

Post by The Legend »

For years, I have been going by the 58 list of 14ers, but it seems that people are referring to 59 now, so which one is considered 59, and is a newer addition. Of course, this could be people missing that there is really 58 commonly accepted 14ers, but please let me know. Would love to add one more to the list this summer. Would give me a great reason to do it again.

Hoo Boy! This subject again! :xST

Everyone knows there are really only 52 14ers. Or 53. Well, maybe 54. OK, 58 total. Alright, Sunlight Spire is there, so it's 59. Actually, it's 74 named 14ers, not including Sunlight Spire. So that makes it 75. There, I'm certain that's it.

North Massive is the 59th 14er, and it generally only applies to the winter list. I believe the Peak is soft ranked. It actually takes considerably more effort than other unranked ones, like Cameron. I've heard of many people doing it as a see rate hike, but they can also be done on the same day.

The Tour de Massive is a fun route. It takes quite a bit of energy to get all the way out to North Massive. You spend so long above 14,000'. There was uncertainty if that peak had the required 300' of prominence to be hard ranked so my son and I did a surveying expedition with a professional-grade Trimble GPS unit. Here were the results showing 272 feet of prominence. You can skip N. Massive and not worry about missing out on a "real" peak.

N. Massive 39.195619°N 106.487442°W 14,333.8 +/- 1.0
Saddle 39.192922°N 106.482884°W 14,061.5 +/- 1.0’

I've always thought 55 was a good compromise. Or maybe 56. Then again, it's a silly debate cause everyone keeps their own list.

I find this post funny because it sounds like nonsense but is actually true.
It supports the view that lists can be somewhat absurd. But at least they do provide us with some direction in choosing our adventures.

(BTW I really thought North Eolus was absurd to be called a separate peak, it took me 15 minutes to the top.)

Andrew Hamilton explained the 58 number as all points that have been given a name by the USGS. If you're not going to go by prominence, then this makes more sense than anything, and it precludes adding things like N Massive, etc., which are not officially named. Hopefully the USGS won't go on a naming spree...!

I sort of added N. Massive as a #59 on my list a few years back as an excuse to hike Massive again. Roach described his West Slopes EC route (3rd edition) as a "notable, seldom visited Tour de Massive" and it was just that. It was an easy, interesting Class 3 scramble and I didn't see a soul till I was back on the Southwest Slopes route.

Hahaha, funny guy. You just cut the list of 14er finishers from several thousand to about 10.

In his revised edition of Colorado Fourteeners, Roach states Fourteener aficionados will climb all 73 of his expanded list. I was content with 58 though I tacked on N Massive and Massive Green in the tour de Massive. Roach's assertion aside, I generally find it more satisfying to get other peaks than another point on the same peak. And I'm glad Sunlight Spire isn't on the list!!
I have phenomenal route-finding abilities. Specifically, I have an uncanny knack for selecting the path of most resistance.
