Just Starting/Quandary Peak

Post by Laurie49417 »

We want to hike Quandary Peak the second week in September, should we expect to run into some snow or will the weather be decent? Also we're first timers is this a good choice?

September is usually a great month to hike, cool nights and warm days.
But there could also be a snow storm.

No one can predict the weather that far in advance. Check condition reports the week you want to go.
If no updated conditions... then the trail will probably be great.

Prepare for wide range of temps, as is usually the case in the mountains.
There are still thunderstorms at this time of year. That means you should descending by noon or earlier. And start by dawn which about 7AM.
It will be going bellow freezing at night and dawn. The wind chills at the summit could be in the 20s so bring jacket, hat, gloves. When you finish the hike in the early afternoon it could be in the 70s, so you want layers to shed and pack to hold them.

Usually peak tree color is late September, but it varies. You might see some color higher up.

It's too early to tell. Usually mid-September is nice, but it can also be snowy. Make sure to check the weather forecast and go prepared.

Also, thunderstorm season is usually starting to wind down by then, but not always. Thunderstorms can still occur.

Quandary should be a good choice.
