Snow Skills Practice

Post by Phil M »

Hey folks!

First post here and I just want to say that I'm so happy we have such a great community and I can't wait to get more involved and contribute!

My buddy and I are looking to further develop our snow climbing skills and techniques. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good mountain/route that has an area to work on these with good, safe snow conditions. I know it's getting to that part of the season where the snow is getting really soft but if there is a place that you know of, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, and again, I'm super pumped to be a part of this community!

Ptarmigan Glacier in RMNP is in good shape. Hit it near sun up (or before). Look for mornings with clear skies the night before.

St. Mary's Glacier just east of James Peak is a popular spot for snow and self arrest practice. The glacier is very close to the parking area, and you can continue on to James Peak if you're interested in adding a summit to your practice day.
