If you want to learn to self arrest just drive up one of the passes and find a short steep section of snow with good run out. The safe run out is the key to any place you are learning. That way if you totally screw up you just come to a stop on your own. It's also best to be close to your car when practicing in case you do something wrong and need to hike out with a sprained ankle. You don't need a long run of snow to practice self arrest, as you should be able to stop yourself quickly, however it should be long and steep enough that you do get some decent speed going quickly.

Once you've mastered self-arresting, then go try glissading. The skills basically are sit on your butt and use your ice axe as a brake. I recommend waterproof pants, though even in those your butt is going to go numb. Softer material glissades slower, slick material glissades faster. The thing to remember with glissading is that speed is not your friend. Keep it under control. If you see a rock in your path, try doing a quick roll to one side or the other. If you see a rock you can't avoid, a cliff, or the end of the snow coming fast; this is where your self arrest skills will come into play
Remember what your knees are for.
