Pagoda Peak in the Flat Tops

Post by perryw »

We were camping last july just west of Ripple Creek Pass when we noticed an odd rock formation at the summit of a mountain just north of the highway. I had no maps of the area other than a Rand McNally Road atlas, which oddly enough shows Pagoda peak on the map. Then it all clicked in my head, Yeah, the thing looks like a pagoda!

We walked up to the snowmobile parking area at the pass and followed the snowmobile trail through beautiful alpine meadows. After a couple miles, we got the first glimpse of the summit.

We hiked for a couple more miles, then left the trail and started bushwhacking to the summit. We found one area on the SW side of the peak, which looked climbable to us non-rock climbers.

It was a beautiful hike, and like most of our hikes in northern CO, we saw no one else except lots of wildlife. We particularly enjoyed watching 6 elk dancing in the meadows below.
