Good hikes near Albequerque NM
I know this isn't Colorado mountains, but will be in ALBQ this next weekend and wondering if anyone has hiked or knows of any good hikes in the area. TIA

Plenty of good hikes. Long, hard, short, easy, whatever, the nearest area is the Sandia Mountains, over 10K snow on top and dry low down right now -of course that could change if we get snow. Microspikes essential on many of the trails. Check this site, or buy Mike Coltrin's book:

My suggestion is drive up north and hike Santa Fe Baldy. The weather is suppose to be great this weekend. Have fun.

2nd the vote for SF Baldy. Did it a couple weeks ago and it's in good shape. Also by SF is Lake Peak. It's a nice 4 or 5 hour climb. Did it this week.

I thought Cabezon Peak was a great outing and it wasn't super far for Albuquerque.

The suggestions above are all good ones. Perhaps my favorite so far was Cabezon--the scrambling was fun, and the views from the summit were great. When we did Cabezon in December, there was some snow near the summit and on parts of the trail, but the scrambling sections were dry.

I do love Albuquerque. Hit Greek town, near the university, if you are looking for some excellent food.
If you're looking for short and highly-accessible hikes, the Petroglyphs NM located on the western boundary of the city has trails going up a few extinct cinder cone volcanoes. They offer some decent views overlooking Albuquerque and can be hiked in 2 or 3 hours.

It would help us if you responded letting us know what you are looking for in the way of distance from ABQ, length and difficulty. I'm not quite sure what you meant by "this next weekend" - is that the weekend now coming to an end or the weekend of January 10th? Either way I hope our suggestions were helpful - I for one would be interested in knowing how it worked out for you.

Sorry I haven't gotten on in a little while. I did look into the sandia area, even called the park services to get weather and snowpack condition. I am really looking for something closer to Albequerque, so within the area. I was under the impression that there was very little snowpack. I also looked at the calender that you posted, asbochav, and am maybe interested in doing the saturday loop...the person that I am taking though is not acclimated and very inexperienced in hiking. She has climbed Shavano and Tab, and is a very fiery and determined individual...so I'm not worried she won't make it. The ranger I talked to said that microspikes at some higher elevations maybe needed, but you may know better. Snowshoes??? She didnt seem to think those were necessary. What are your thoughts?
