Royal Arch Trail Temporary Closures

APRIL 15, 2015 - ROYAL ARCH TRAIL WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS STARTING APRIL 21

Royal Arch Trail will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting April 21

The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department will begin weekday closures of the Royal Arch Trail starting next week so trail crews can rebuild steep sections of the trail.

The Front Range Climbing Stewards (FRCS), a local trail-building group that helped OSMP reopen the flood-damaged Royal Arch Trail, will assist the department in replacing stone steps that have sustained years of erosion damage. In order to complete this work, however, OSMP will need to close the Royal Arch Trail on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from April 21 through May 6.

The trail will remain open Thursday through Monday. These closures will help ensure public safety while FRCS quarries rock needed for trail repairs. OSMP may implement additional weekday closures later in May to complete improvements along the Royal Arch Trail.

Visitors may call OSMP at 303-441-3440 for more information about this planned work. Additional information about OSMP trails and temporary closures is available at http://www.bouldercolorado.gov/osmp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

We were actually joking about the old parts of the trail that aren't as nice as the shiny new parts of the trail they just rebuilt on our way up the other day. We were going to rib on Roger to get a move it, and hurry up! I didn't expect them to do even more work, that pretty amazing.

Some background:

It's really making some of the other trails in the OSMP look super wanting of some tender love and care. The trail between the 1st/2nd took a ton of damage just from the added traffic from people who would have instead gone to Royal Arch.

1st/2nd trail, like most of OSMP, suffers from complete lack of maintenance for decades. The Sanitas East Ridge trail was constructed 25 years ago & hasn't been touched since. Work on Royal Arch is being led by climbing groups, not OSMP. Just sayin'.

Bummer to hear - I know you know more about the OSMP history of politics than I do.

Reading stories about Roger's time in the area is pretty inspirational. He writes about following the Mesa Trail back when it was just coffee cans on poles to the mythical Eldorado, to doing the first ascent of Death and Transfiguration (which is approached via Royal Arch), or even his cross country coaching in the summer, taking kids up Bear Peak. That dude has been giving back.

I'm one of the FRCS. We'll be looking for a couple volunteers each weekday starting 4/28 for Royal Arch Trail then on to The Amphitheatre area in Gregory Canyon. Info on BCC's website or contact me directly. We do some cool stuff with stone cutting and rigging systems to move rocks!
