Lost Creek Wilderness Trail Conditions

Post by pklotzbach »

Good afternoon,

I was hoping to hike the Hankins Pass/McCurdy/McCurdy Park/Goose Creek loop in the Lost Creek Wilderness this coming weekend (May 23-24) and was curious if anyone had been up there recently with a report on snow conditions. Thanks!

I was up to Hankin Pass on Thursday of this week from the Tarryall side. There was some snow on the trail the last 1/2 mile but nothing serious. That section on the Tarryall side is on the north side of the ridge and probably doesn't see much sun.

We were on the eastern side (Goose Creek side) of Hankins Pass trail yesterday for about 2 miles. (Went off trail south from that point.) The trail was a bit of a mess from high water. Part of the trail had turned into a second creek. No snow on the trail. (@ 10K on the north slope above the trail was another matter however.. :| )

Some of the creek crossings were a bit more adventurous than normal.

Bumping this up. How's the Lost Creek Wilderness shaping up? Is there still a lot of snow in the area?
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Clearing up quick. We crossed patchy snow above 11,500' above lake park (usually an area that holds snow later) and it was easily navigated and melting quick. Looking to the north you could see snow above 12k, but nothing consistent.

Mr BThoms TR has photos from Sunday:

Did Bison Peak from Ute Creek TH on Sunday 11/8. Great conditions, about 1/2 the trail had snow cover, but no traction or flotation required. took microspikes but didn't use them. some deeper snow near the summit, but still manageable.

Most incredible summit I've been on yet. And we had the entire trail to ourselves.

Has anyone has been in LCW recently? We're starting from Spruce Grove TH and headed to Hankins Pass then up to Lake Park. We'll likely take snow shoes, but any updates are helpful.

Thanks

Summited Lake Park Peak on Sun (1/3) from the Spruce Grove TH. The route to Hankins Pass had a bootpack we were able to follow, but from Hankins Pass to Lake Park saddle we had to break trail. The trail was a little hard to follow at times, but I'm fairly confident we stayed on the trail almost the entire time. We wore snowshoes up and down from the Lizard Rock Trail/Hankins Pass Trail junction and doubt we would have summited without them.

We put in a pretty solid trench the whole way, so the trail should be easy to follow until the next big storm. Based on the forecast, it looks like that area is getting some accumulation today.

I just posted a TR too. Hope this helps anyone headed that way.

It sure doesn't look like much snow up there when looking at the snow depth sites. Just a few inches from the last storm. Would also be interested in hearing some first hand information.
