Almagre Mountain? In the Winter??

Post by jibler »

Anyone have any thoughts on hiking Almagre in the winter? As in fairly soon?

I was flying into Denver from the SW - and checking out the scene with binoculars as is my custom on planes.

It looked fairly dry up on top and seems like it would have great views of pikes etc.

your help appreciated.

info on where to park etc. also welcome.

I did Almagre last winter and had no trouble - however it was pretty dry that December. My TR might help you out a little.

Although I have not been up there this year,
Almagre is one of my favorite winter destinations.

Generally low avalanche concerns, but expect
any and all winter hiking conditions.

My two entry points to the area are usually the east and west ends of
FS 379.

From the west end near McReynolds reservoir, I generally carry
snowshoes due to windblown conditions. From the south-east end
in Frosty park, most often I use my back country skis.

Don't expect any trails or to see anyone - That is why I find it
so delightful.

Enjoy!

I was kind of hoping this place was popular with Colo Sprgs. locals - I wouldn't mind if someone else busted some trail for me!

I had been thinking of going this weekend but that's looking less likely.

Has anyone else gone up from 7 bridges? I was curious of the mileage and gain.

I did it once via Bear Creek trail, up the scree by Runs-Down-Fast mountain and up the ridge north of there to Almagre. Long day, about 12 miles and 6000' with lots of bushwhacking. High Drive is closed so you can't start at that trailhead any more, but using Seven Bridges should be about the same distance.

From Seven Bridges, the round trip is closer to 25 miles and 5,700 ft. Not in winter conditions, this is a long, but very doable day hike. Winter would certainly change the game a bit!
