Yosemite Questions

Post by anthony156 »

Hey All,

Since you've never failed to help me out, just have a few questions. Hiking next week in Yosemite:

Day 1 Yosemite Falls to North Dome
Day 2 North Dome to Tenaya Lake
Day 3 Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest to LYV
Day 4 LYV to Half Dome and down to the Valley

Have a few places to camp, but just wondering if anyone has any trip reports or advice for this route. Yes, I know we're going into the tourist gauntlet in July.

I did something similar a few years back. We camped close to the start of half dome trail. Start early. You want to be up and down off the cables before the day hikers arrive. Bring grippy gloves.

Half Dome itself requires a permit in addition to any camping permit.
2/3 can be reserved in advance, 1/3 or day of travel.

Its well worth. There is an interesting Class 3 passage.

I've hiked 0.5 Dome several times from the valley, it's close to 5000' gain, and a pretty long day hike. So the route from LYV to the top of the dome is around 4 miles, with the last mile and a half a pretty thrilling stairway followed by the infamous cables. Those cables get crowded, and it's definitely not for people with a fear of heights.

On the way down, I'd opt for the John Muir Trail, not the Mist Trail, which is way steep and pretty slippery being so close to the falls. The best views of Nevada Fall are from the JMT, and the grade is more manageable. Be ready for heat in the lower elevations.

Also the route up from the valley to Yosemite Falls is pretty steep and there's very little shade. Going all the way to North Dome is a long day's hike. North Dome is much more easily accessed from Tioga Pass Road, where's it's a relatively level hike. Tenaya Lake is a jewel, hopefully you'll have your Ansel Adams moment.

Haven't hiked Clouds Rest, can't help you on that one.

Thanks everyone for the input. I've done Half Dome 3 times now, going once up the falls routes, once up the 4 mile/Panorama trail, once through Tuolomene. For this route I'd like to do a round trip and am prepared for tourists and heat, so the goal is to wake early, and avoid them both! I'll let you know how it goes.
