Fort Collins Man Missing since Tues 10/20/15

Post by acidchylde »

Saw this article on the Coloradoan this morning. http://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/20 ... /74404890/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A 74-year-old Fort Collins man has been missing since Tuesday morning.

Thomas Seth Mereness was last seen at 9 a.m. Tuesday in western Fort Collins wearing a blue Patagonia fleece jacket. He's 6-feet and weighs 168 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Mereness wears wire-rimmed glasses and drives a silver 2001 BMW 325i with Colorado license plate 061-UUT, according to Fort Collins police.

Mereness told his family he was going hiking but did not provide a specific location. He typically likes to hike in Larimer and Boulder counties, particularly near Lyons and Estes Park, according to Fort Collins police. Because his location is unknown and weather conditions are deteriorating, family members are concerned for his safety.

Anyone with information about his destination or current location are encouraged to contact Detective Tessa Jakobsson at 970-221-6575 or Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Crime Stoppers can also be reached online at http://www.stopcriminals.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Article has a photo, appears to have a distinctive birthmark/'liverspot' under his left eye.

I'm pretty sure that is the same Tom Mereness that is one (Edit: the first one) of the winter 14er finishers. Bummer. Hope he's ok and he's found.

I believe Darin is correct, and this is THE Tom Mereness who was the first finisher of the winter 14er list in 1992.

I really hope Tom is found safely! We're all thinking of you Tom!

Does anyone else find the police sergeant's use of the term "self-inflicted" unusual? Hypothermia, falls, etc would typically be described as "accidental," I would think. I'm wondering if there's more to the story than meets the eye--especially given this guy's experience.

I don't know this guy or if this discussion is even appropriate in this forum, but it's not uncommon for people to commit suicide in the outdoors. From the article that's what it sounds like this sergeant thinks happened here, but nothing is final until the medical examiner determines the manner of death.

I find nothing unusual about it. The police is simply stating what his experience tells him. A sad outcome regardless.....
