Camp Hale / Jackal Hut

Postby Kojones » Tue Dec 18, 2012 8:34 am

Howdy all -

I have been very excited about my trip to Jackal Hut with a group of people this winter, but also have been following anxiously the snow conditions at the snotel sites in the area and at similar altitudes we'd be at. It's looking like there is between 14 and 21 inches in the area (with the exception of Fremont Pass which is now reading 195 inches - clearly a mistake). Has anybody had a first-hand look at the Camp Hale area and Jackal Hut? I am really wanting to take my expedition sled for reasons I'm not listing, but there has to be a good amount of snow for that.

Cheers,
Kojones

Isn't that area (Camp Hale) closed due to asbestos?

I believe north of the trail head is closed until 1 foot of snow is on the ground to cover it up.

I was in the Vail zone this past weekend and we skied waist deep in places. With alot more expected today and tonight things could set up fairly decent for coverage. Plus you're still a month out from your trip. More snow will fall before you come, fingers crossed of course.

I spoke with the snow mobile rental folks at Nova Guides about a month ago regarding the asbestos. According to them the asbestos removal did not effect access to Resolution Road...

Oh, man! Was the rec area opened up and in use? If so, I need to get there for some snowmobile/ski lapping.
