Independence pass closure location?

Postby RobertPetrowsky » Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:39 pm

Does anyone know if the gate on Indy Pass is closed at the normal La Plata trailhead or further up? I haven't been up that way this year to check and was thinking about hiking that area soon. I know last year it was closed at the base of the switchbacks with the low snow.

It's closed around a couple miles further up from the La Plata TH.

You are able to get high enough to even do the south face route on Lackawanna described here:

This can also be found in Roach's book. You however can't get to the first big switchback at the North Lake Creek TH

If you have a topo map handy, the normal closure gate on the east side is fairly easy to find. Its located immediately past Graham Gulch at about 10,480. It is about 100' past the road that goes into Graham Gulch where it is marked "BM 10475" just south of where the map has a dot labeled "Brumley" on the side of 82. At least those labels appear on "MyTopo" maps online... zoom in here: http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/QMap.php?Q=11032

Edit: I meant EAST side...
