Trailhead Status Info Needed

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sat May 12, 2007 11:10 am

As the summer climbing season approaches, many of us will be looking for recent TH status information and openings. If you've been to one of the 14er trailheads in the past few days, you can help! Thanks!

As of 06/12/2008
Nellie Creek Trailhead.
Avalanche debris at the .5 mile point. Looks like the cut some of the debris out.
At the 3.2 mile mark on the 4 mile ride to the TH, there is a slide of trees dirt and rock.
Creek is running high.

ATV can make it all the way.
A jeep with good driver can make it to the 3.2 mile mark.
Trucks and cars will stop at the .5 mile mark.
Not many places to park or to turn around

As of 06/13/2008
Grizzly Creek, Silver Creek and American BasinTrailheads
Perfect.

American Basin Trailhead, I was going to climb Handies via this trailhead.
Dawson says 2.0 miles from Silver Creek trail head...I did not see anything at the 2 mile mark, and my GPS indicated the waypoint was 4 miles form Silver Creek Trailhead.
At 3 miles, I stopped and turned around. Ride was rough and getting rougher, so I opted to do Handies from Grizzly Gulch Trailhead.

Umm... uwe, I think the point is to update the TH status page, link located in the 1st post of the thread... not the thread itself. :)

My wife and I hiked Mount Elbert on 6/22/08 and the entire trail was pretty snow free. The road in was in great shape and we had no problems at all coming up. 8)

Was hoping to head to Berthoud Pass and catch a trail there but understand that the snowpack is still a couple of weeks late in melting. Looking at Twin Domes or Stanley Trailhead. Has anyone been up there in the last couple of weeks?

Thanks

Sorry, not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot, but here goes....I want to hike Grays/Torreys this weekend and was wondering about car clearance I've seen mentioned...I have a VW Jetta, will that clear it?

Thanks,
Whitney

And if this is a bad idea, any suggestions for alternatives? Can I park and then add the 3 miles on to hike to the trailhead?

I would park your Jetta at the bottom of the road. There is plenty of parking right where you exit off of I-70 and you can hike up the road. And I think it's fairly easy to hitch a ride up and down since you will be going on a weekend. Have fun!
