Perseids - Good Places for Pictures?

Post by bode_bode »

Does anyone have any tips for a good place to take pictures of the Perseids within an hour or so of Denver? Anyone ever gone up to the top of Mt. Evans for this? All suggestions are welcome - thanks!

Above Hoosier Pass. Around Shrine Pass are some open areas as well.

Evans will likely have a lot of ambient light from Denver. It would probably be best to get just a bit beyond the front range foothills (or least with a ridge between yourself and the Denver light pollution). I have been up to Guanella, Berthoud and Loveland passes for the Perseids before and they have worked out well for very easy access to a short hike and/or setting up a chair next to the car. The most sky is probably Loveland but seemed to have the most ambient light. Guanella was a good combination of access, dark(er) and a decent amount of sky. Plus I found that with the long exposure shots looking east, it was a nice touch with Bierstadt and a slight glow the camera picked up from the Denver lights behind.

The knapsack of custom falls off his back with the first step he makes into these precincts. Here is sanctity which shames our religions, and reality which discredits our heroes."
