Can anyone tell me what made this?

Postby Teeboy » Tue Feb 19, 2013 2:13 pm

Ran into these tracks yesterday. just curious if someone would know. It may be a dog...but, it had long "claw-like" impressions at the end of the toes. Thanks!

Dog or coyote. A cat track would not have claw marks and looks rounded, different

Here is an online reference about the difference between Mountain Lion and Dog prints (more similar than you may realize) http://www.bear-tracker.com/caninevsfeline.html.

Apparently the claw like impressions are the very thing that more often identifies it as a large Dog not a Feline, although that isn't 100% because a Cat that is attacking might have it's claws extended.

It definitely looks canine to me, though I can't tell whether it's from a pet dog or a coyote. It looks too big to be a fox, and we do not have wild wolves in Colorado (assuming you found this in Colorado).

All North American wild felines (mountain lions, lynxes, bobcats) have retractable claws, so their claw-marks do not show up in their footprints. They also have wider feet. The narrow, pointed appearance of this pawprint is a canine trait.

Undoubtedly the longer claws caused by neglect belong to the cousin of Lucky.

I agree, it appears to be a canine. Dog or coyote.

It looks like a dog track. It would be interesting to see how the track relates to the other tracks around it.

Mountain Lion tracks are rounder, both in general form as well as the imprint of each pad. And generally you don't see the claws, although occasionally you might. Fox tracks are much smaller, and they generally direct register, where the rear track is almost directly in the front track. Coyote tracks are also generally smaller, although this dog isn't as large as it might appear, since the mud the track was made in tends to spread out the paw.

I hope that helps.
