+1 to the bothy bag. They deploy in about a second and it's like night and day when you get inside. Put on your downie, sit on your pack to keep the cold away and wait it out. Another advantage is that you don't need flat ground, just enough space for you (and your partner(s)) to sit. Not sure what mine weighs but it packs down to about the size of a grapefruit.

To me, if it is winter and you bother to carry some type of shelter, I'd rather have a good pad than anything else. Sure, sitting on your pack sounds great, but you can't lean up against any rocks or snow. Hopefully your feet don't get cold after stopping (and if like me, at least damp) resting on the ground.

I carry my Xterm pad at 21 oz and my cuben tarp at 7 oz. Maybe a bit on the heavy and bulky side, but so is my gut. But, at least you can somewhat get some sleep. And if a partner gets hurt, they won't get the heat zapped out of them from the ground while you go get help.
