Couloir Climbing April 20

Postby ash-ish » Thu Mar 07, 2013 11:55 pm

Looking for somebody to climb a couloir in front range or tenmile on April 20. I am considering one of these in the order of preference:

1. Dragon's Tail - RMNP
2. Cristo Couloir - Quandary
3. Northeast Couloir - Wheeler Mtn
4. Quandary Couloir - Quandary
5. Pacific Peak - Y Couloir
6. Atlantis Couloir - Atlantic Peak

I know I have listed too many options, but I will be flying in from Houston so it's hard to predict the conditions. I will narrow the list as the date comes closer.

Hey,
Not 100% sure of my schedule yet but typically i'm free saturdays. I'd be most interested in Wheeler

I'd be interested too. (PS, April may be too early for Dragons Tail?).
I'm slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Cool. I will update you guys about my plans soon. Scott, I climbed DT in mid march a couple years ago with a guide as part of a course. It is S/SE facing. The snow was firm and well consolidated in the early hours.

Given typical weather and snowpack (whatever that means), you could do probably do Cristo and Wheeler in the same day in about an 8-10 hours, lots of vertical, probably around 5000 feet, but that would be a cool day.

Gnar - that is very tempting for a flatlander like me, and also quite challenging for a flatlander like me :). Will keep it in mind and see how I feel on that day.

Alright guys, there seem to be avalanche concerns in the front range - with that taken into consideration, I have narrowed down to Dragons Tail for Saturday morning. I would like to start quite early - preferably before 5:00AM.

I'm curious, what factors made you narrow it down to Dragon's Tail?

I'm going to have to bail. Climbing a couloir route right after these storms is outside my comfort zone.

Maybe look into Y couloir on Pikes? Just an idea. Otherwise I'd look in the direction of San Juans. All the choices you've listed are windloaded with lots of new snow, so may not be such a great idea this weekend.

Bean,
May be there is a confusion in the way I phrased my sentence. I spoke to a CMS guide who had been out in RMNP yesterday morning and he said the park did not receive much snow - but I think that changed after our conversation. I asked him about the possibility of DT being relatively safe - he said there is a possibility the new snow may settle by the weekend - will have to wait and see.
