Any info on Baldy?

Post by summitrunner »

It is looking dry from Breck but has anyone been up there? Do you need crampons or snowshoes? Thanks!

We were thinking of doing Baldy on the 4th of July, I would like some insight as well....

Hiked it Sunday from Breck (Mt. Baldy Road/TH) - it's dry with a few easy snow patches along the north ridge.

The view on top of Baldy was amazing (Thursday morning this week). The route finding and loose rocks in the boulder field were fun and challenging. Started at the bus stop on Baldy Road and found the west side of the mountain more challenging than the east side. Saw two other dudes on the way down but that was it. Tons of wild flowers too.

We were up on Baldy this past Sunday.

Wow, the views are fantastic, we could see Holy Cross between Peak 8 & 9.

And the views of the Ten Mile range was awesome.

As summitrunner said, lots of wild flowers..

You guys must have summited right after me. On the return trip, I bailed off of the side of the last false summit instead of backtracking over the numerous bumps on the ridge. The scree and talus made the slope interesting, for sure. I found some remnants of an aerial tramway that I didn't see on the way up. Plus one on the wildflowers. I saw columbine, larkspur, three different species Indian paintbrush, alpine forget-me-nots, alpine primrose, sky pilots, king's crowns, Parry's penstemon, sickletop lousewort, alpine bistort, silky phacelia, and many others. It looked pretty close to peak bloom, in my opinion.
