Here's a quickie Randal: if you park at Monarch Pass you should be able to make the Monarch Crest summit. It is barely over 12,000 feet and only about 700 feet above the pass, but you get some fine panoramas of Shavano, Tabeguache, Ouray and others. Compared to others mentioned here it is small potatoes but with good weather the views are remarkable.

Keep the good ideas coming! I need some inspiration. I'd also like to add "Peak X" in the Lost Creek Wilderness and North Twin Cone, South Twin Cone, and Mt. Blaine at Kenosha Pass - all fine 12ers IMHO.

Thanks everyone, I've also enjoyed these great suggestions. Any of these particularly good yet (not wind-scoured/thin snow) for snowshoeing or light x-country/light backcountry touring? (Hope this isn't a threadjack, just also excited about winter summits and more of a break from ski resorts this year...)

Can you do either of these in winter? I haven't looked at them -- are they low avy potential (i.e., trees to ridgeline) climbs?

The road to the 4th of July TH is not maintained in the winter, you would have to start near Hessie.

Climbed James Peak yesterday. For those of you looking to ski I would say ski conditions are poor except on the upper 1/3 of the mountain. The middle third of the route is thin/windblown in quite a few areas.

Just gotta get creative in the line you pick, with some wax and ptex available upon your arrival home.
