Trip Reports (29)

Huerfano TH/ Lindsey TH 11/23

Post by sgladbach »

Using 4WD (highway mud/snow tires, not chains) we drove w/o problems to a point 1/2 mile below the forest boundary. We parked here. That is 1.5 miles below the Huerfano/Zapata THs or 2.5 miles below the Lily Lake TH (Lindset TH) at road terminus.

Since there most likely won't be a TR, I'll give a quick conditions report. (mjsherman, jgoodhart, sgladbach; three unimaginative screenames!)

From the car we used snowshoes, but you could boot it to either TH.

We climbed Huerfano via the Huerfano Trail and North Slopes route. Snowshoes were important above the summer TH, especially the bushwhack from 11,100' on the Huerfano Trail south up Dutch Creek to the open northern slopes of Huerfano at 12,200'. Many mostly dry options above here. Ice axes and crampons were not needed. There isn't much on this route in skiable condition right now.

Apparently, Lindsey would have been about the same kind of day. Snowshoes (skis?) all the way to the Iron nipple saddle, then the west ridge (though the standard route looked pretty dry.) The summit ski route does not appear to be in right now.

Couldn't we all use 50 years of humble growth?
