The photos posted throughout the thread have been a real treat. Misrlija's fine effort at the lake takes the cake. Beautiful place for pause for reflection. =D>

Are the mines part of what used to be called "Last Chance and Hilltop?" We're talking about 1880-1910 era, for the most part.

Jim Davies - While eyeing a trip up Horseshoe this weekend I was reading a trip report by the wonderfully informative greenhouseguy, and he referred to the "diving board" structure as an ore tipple, with a tipple being defined as "an apparatus for emptying coal, ore, etc. from a mine car by tipping". History and beauty all in one location.

greenhouseguy's report - http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=3921" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I figured it must be something like that, but it seemed odd to be "tippling" your ore off of a 20-foot drop. There also doesn't seem to be a road underneath it, so I wonder if some important part is missing (like a flume or something to guide the ore down to the road).

Looks like a 'waste rock' tipple. 'Waste rock' being non-ore containing.

Perhaps a connection with Jim's and rijaca's posts: at one time there were tram towers extending WNW from the mill structure still standing at Leavick. A narrow-gauge RR, Denver, South Park and Hilltop served the area. Last time I was there (July 5) I missed seeing the towers - wonder if anyone else saw them.

That makes sense, as there's a pile of rock under the end.

Close, reasonable year round access (when are they going to charge a fee, haha j/k), and you can laugh at the larger hordes on Sherman.

If Horseshoe Mtn were a person, would Ouray be a 1st cousin or step-sibling? :?:
