Every week during July the Herman Gulch Trailhead is closed from Tuesday to Friday so the Forest Service can cut down the standing dead timber along the trails that lead out of that trailhead. Discovered that as I was going to hike up Woods, Parnassus, Bard, Robeson and Englemann today.
The trails and trailhead are open the other days of the week.

Re: Herman Gulch Trailhead - closed
An alternate approach to those peaks from the north starts at Ruby Creek. This approach can be used to avoid both the current weekday closures and the weekend crowds at the Herman Gulch trailhead.

Is there an actual trail and trailhead for the northern approach? If so, where is it? Or do you just pull off the road near the switchbacks? I was thinking about hiking those mountains this weekend and from looking at the map the Ruby Creek approach looks like it would be a nice one. Also, how is Woods Creek Road? 2WD or 4WD?
Thanks in advance.

No actual trail/TH, although there is an old road that goes up/parallels Ruby Creek. Pull off the road near/just past the Urad H20 treatment plant. The Woods Creek road is 2wd to this point (gets rougher beyond).BobbyFinn wrote:Hicountryhiker, hicountryhiker wrote:An alternate approach to those peaks from the north starts at Ruby Creek. Bob,
I concur with rijaca that the Woods Creek road is 2wd to Ruby Creek. The old 4wd road into Ruby Creek is gated and can be identified by a sign stating “Extreme Avalanche Dangerâ€. There is a faint, intermittent trail that leaves the Ruby Creek valley and ascends to the Engelmann/Robeson saddle.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to exploring that area.
