Mt. Audubon Conditions

Post by Alpine D »

My girlfriend and I are thinking of climbing Mt. Audubon tomorrow from the Brainard area, but with the recent heavy storm this week, I'm not sure how much conditions have changed. Does anyone have any updated info on the area? I know the CAIC has all ranges showing considerable avalanche danger, and wanted to see how precarious the standard route looks. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you, and Merry Christmas!

The standard route on Audubon is low angle and not really a risk for Avalanche.

We tried the standard route on Audubon last weekend. The trail was pretty difficult to follow from Mitchell Lake and covered with super soft new snow. We made it to the ridge around treeline and turned back due to +/- white out conditions.

If you can stay on the trail I would think avy danger would be minimal, but as we lost the trail, options for gaining the ridge crossed some suspect areas.

I wish we were out today, it's beautiful and clear!!!

Good Luck.

Does anyone know the conditions on Brainard Lake road and Audubon and Paiute? I was thinking about biking up the road and then doing the South East Ridge of Audubon and then the traverse to Paiute, then descend the standard route. Is the road bikeable with a mountain bike? I'm assuming snowshoes will be needed with the warmer temperatures this weekend.

Thanks

I was wondering the exact same thing! I'm assuming the road isn't bikeable yet. Bfrieden, if you go find out, please post your findings!

The road is not bikeable. It's just snow filled with tons of postholes and some random pavement patches. We pushed/intermittently rode our bikes up about 2 miles of the road (when it was frozen) and it was not worth it. We had to push the bikes back down the road through the slush in the afternoon so the bikes only made it harder.

That's what I figured; thanks for the update. I definitely have that on my radar for the May-ish time frame.
