Gore Range

Post by westandy »

Hey, I am trying to find good beta on the Gore. I have been reading trip reports on 13ers, and Cooper's scrambles mentions the Grand Traverse, but I wouldn't mind suggestions on routes for hiking/scrambling, skiing, and possibly other traverses.

Also, I'd be cool to hook up with anyone else wanting to head into the Gore.

Thanks ahead of time!

The first rule of the Gore Range is you do not talk about the Gore Range

The second rule of the Gore Range is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE GORE RANGE

The third rule is if this is your first time in the Gore Range you MUST do a scramble

OK, good first-time outings are either of the Partners, the Palomino/Grand Traverse/Valhalla combo or Keller. I'd work my way up to something like Eagles Nest.

Nice! Honestly, from as hard as it has been to find beta on the Gore, relative to our 14ers, I was wondering if the first two rules of Gore Range were true!

Many moon's ago I picked up a book/phamlet about the Gore Range from Joseph D. Kramarsic, very interesting stuff.

Spending some time in the Booth, Pitkin and Gore Creek drainages will work wonders for you! Easy access from Vail too! After that, it gets adventurous!

Hmm...sounds like a pretty boring place. I'm not sure why anyone would go there.

Kramarsic's book and a map and intuition is sometimes all you need to go in there.
Or, from reports that have been posted on this site, along with Cooper's scrambles book, one can get a good start to finding fun in the Gore range.

What are the snow levels in the Gore Range now? I’m thinking that South Rock Creek might be a good choice, as it’s open
forests and marshes, and only goes up to 11,000 feet. We enjoyed backpacking there last August.

I mean, it was awful! No trail, no RV hookups, and no wi-fi! :-) If you want to download our GPX track, don't go to http://www.casafuturatech.com/Personal/ ... _Range.GPX" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, I won't give it to you! And don't look at our horrible pictures on my Facebook page, on my timeline for August 17, 2013, https://www.facebook.com/thomas.d.kehoe/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. That Valhalla mountain sure is ugly! :-)

Question. Can Kramarsic's book still be ordered directly from him? If so, how?

Thanks

We picked up several books from him a couple of years ago. Look on summitpost for additional info. Try the Gore Range page.
