Sniktau Alternate

Post by steelfrog »

Yo. Howdy. So, often we come into Vail and head up Sniktau for a little acclimation, but that's getting old. I was wondering, looking at a map, if there isn't something ont he other side we could do that would be fun, such as Hagar Mountain or Pettingell Peak or one of the unnameds?

I haven't done Hagar, but Pettingell is quite a bit more challenging than Sniktau and has a much longer approach before the serious elevation gain. I think Parnassus or Woods Mountain would be more in line with Sniktau.

The hike up to Herman Lake is really nice (and easy). Things get interesting in you go for Pettingell or The Citadel once you attain the summit ridges.

Actually wouldn't mind some scrambling. Are there any scramble opportunities near the Eisenhauer tunnel?

Citadel. Citadel to Pettingell.

If you're looking for a high trail head, similar to Loveland Pass, just head up Berthoud Pass and hike Flora. From there you can run the ridge to either Eva or possibly Parry if you're up to it. Nice hike.

Recommend Flora. Hagar is cool too, but much harder than Sniktau. There's no trail so you're hiking backcountry all the way through the Loveland Ski Area, then up to Golden Bear and ridge running over to Hagar, finishing with a short class 3 scramble. Long day.

I'm really liking the idea of Citadel. Was thinking if heading up Herman Gulch got a bit and then hang a left and head up to the saddle near Bethel and then hang a right toward Citadel

This will be good warm up for our treks into the Gores! Powell, H and Booth maybe. Silverthorne from the east. Be fun.

It's definitely more work than climbing Sniktau from Loveland Pass, but Citadel is a great hike/scramble.

Citadel. Citadel to Pettingell.
Can one do that without the 40ft rappel?

You don't have to go up and over Golden Bear. You can just start from Dry Gulch. You have a trail for most of the way. Its quite an easy hike all things considered, and is probably around 7 miles RT.
