"School Bus Peaks"

Post by d_baker »

About a month ago, Terri H. and I hiked Gladstone from the new Silver Pick TH. On our way out, we noticed recent work had been done to the trail -- an excavator had "reclaimed" half of the old road that was once used to get into Elk Creek Basin.
Back at the TH, there was this sign by the FS:

Turns out that the FS had been doing a mine site cleanup in the Elk Creek Basin.
Terri had been up there sometime in early August, and talked about the school bus that was up there, which can be seen in Furthermore's TR.....http://www.14ers.com/images/trips/2013/ ... 2436_l.jpg.

Terri wondered if they took the bus out. Turns out they did, because she sent me a txt today telling me there was a story w/picture in the local newspaper in Montrose about it.

Furthermore, you need to edit your TR. ;)

My wife and I took a wrong turn the first time we hiked from the ROA TH. I knew we were in the wrong basin when the sun came up and we saw the school bus. Now I'll have no idea where I am.

Couple of links, the first shows a picture of a Cat pulling the bus out and the second is an article on the cleanup project.

I was up there this summer and got a good chuckle at how a bus could make it that far up into the basin.

Thanks for posting these links, Darin.
