Lake City 13er suggestions requested.

Post by El GUapo »

Will be with a group of 40-50 year old, flatland, business professionals, August 2016, for a summer retreat, and seeking recommendations for a "reasonable" 13er in the Lake City area. The ideal peak would be fun hiking for those who have already completed a few class 1/2 fourteeners, mixed with some who have never set foot on a mountain. Prefer a well marked trail, minimal exposure. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

In my mind, Handies is the obvious choice. Easy (as things go), beautiful, no exposure, etc.

You would only need to make sure you have a vehicle suitable to make it to the trailhead, which is not that difficult a thing to do.

Redcloud or Sunshine - second choice and would fit the bill. I just found Handies more enjoyable as far as simply hiking goes
Wetterhorn - in my mind probably not for this group. Doesn't sound you want 3rd class stuff.
Uncompaghre - maybe - a little more exciting with some limited scrambling and exposure. If the first-timers are not able to make it then maybe choose this one.

There aren't a lot of 13ers in the area with a well marked trail (at least not to the summit). If you have 4wd or not makes a big difference too.

You can look up trip reports for some of these:

PT 13,106 (near Uncompaghre) - trail goes most of the way
Wildhorse Peak - off the Engineer Pass road
PT 13,132 - near Wildhorse and the top of Engineer Pass
Wood Mountain and Cinnamon Mountain - off the top of Cinnamon Pass (there are some other 13ers you can connect with as well)
Bent Peak - road goes pretty high up
PT 13,811 and 13,832 - easy tundra walks near Sunshine and Redcloud
