Class 2 13er Traverse

Post by TootysMom »

We are looking for a class 2 13er traverse to climb with our dog. We find Class 1 not challenging enough, but Class 2+ or 3 too precarious for our dog. Front Range, Sawatch or Mosquito preferred. We and our dog can easily hike 8-12 miles. We did a steep pitch up Mt. Silverheels last weekend and had a blast...no one on the mountain but us! Thanks!

One of my favs is Bard to Parnassus. You can also add in Woods Mtn and/or Englemann/Robeson if you are feeling strong. Did them with my two dogs way back in the day...

You can climb Weston Peak from Weston Pass and follow it forever. Weston, Ptarmigan, Horseshoe, Sheridan, Sherman, Gemini...on and on.

It's an easy ridge run, class 1 and 2, with great views the whole way. Very pooch friendly.

You just need a shuttle back to your car, which you could probably mooch or pay for from the crowd at Sherman.

Most 13er traverses outside of the Elks and San Juans are Class 2. :) Anyway, Arkansas/Tweto (stiff 2, wouldn't call it 2+) and Horseshoe/Sheridan (easier) are nearby ones that haven't been mentioned yet. Also, Indy Pass/Twining/whatever's-north-of-that-i-forget

Check out the peaks south of Cottonwood Pass too, all the way south to Emma Burr. Very pretty area and above the pass/lakes you have it to yourself.

I'll second Jay521's suggestion of Parnassus/Woods.

Last year I did Watrous Gulch to Parnassus and then a ridgecrawl west going over Woods and other 12K peaks to intersect with the Herman Gulch/Continental Divide Trail. About 11 miles/4K vertical - very enjoyable hike (no technical) and easy to access from Denver. I didn't see another soul until I hit the intersection with the trail to Herman Lake.

I would do it again (maybe I'll add in Bard next time).

Indy/Twining is easy 2, but north to Pt. 13545 and beyond has a good bit of class 3. Agree with Emma Burr/Kreutzer though, good fun.

"Repeater" = Kuss

"Repeater" was officially named Kuss a few years ago.
