Mount Ouray Climb Time

Post by RJ_Greenhorn24 »

I plan to hike Mount Ouray this weekend from the Marshall Pass side (South/West Ridge). Does anyone have a rough estimate of the climb time for that peak? There's plenty of trip reports for this peak but no one states a climb time and I'm not finding anything on the climb time list for it.
Thanks! :-D

Says they left at 5:36am, back to the car at 1:30. So 8 hour day, but of course everyone will be different speeds. Good luck!

Looked at my notes, 3:20 up and 2:35 down, total of 5:55 on my last trip. Summer conditions and relaxed pace. From Marshall Pass. Ron

Five or six hours is about right for the average hiker. It's 6.2 miles and 3,400' of elevation roundtrip (due to some ups and downs) so if you average 1,000 feet per hour on the ascent that's roughly 5 hours total hiking time plus another half hour to an hour for breaks and summit time. Fast hikers can probably cut that time considerably...it's a terrific hike so take your time and enjoy it :-)

If you don't own it already, consider buying 50 Best Summit Hikes in Colorado by James D. It is my second favorite guidebook and the author is an active member of this forum. His Hike #23 (Ouray) is rated at 5-7 hours from Marshall Pass TH. His times are generally spot on. I have done a score of his suggested summits and look forward to the remaining thirty.

My goodness, you guys are impressive. I can't tell you my climb-time because I didn't summit. I made it to the first "bump" on the ridge before deciding to head back because of winds that were already throwing me off balance (this was on 9/23). But I'm an untalented hiker. Mt. Ouray is beautiful and I will try again next year.
