Cassin Ridge - 1961 Photos

Postby Presto » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:51 am

This was posted on Summitpost. Wonderful old photos. Enjoy! :D

Cassin thanked Washburn for his photos and help on the Cassin Ridge on Denali by giving him these photos of the climb. A few years ago Washburn donated them to the AAC and they've recently put them on flickr.

The mountain had granted me safe passage once more. I fumbled to get my camera out and gingerly turned to snap a photo. It didn’t come out well, but perhaps it wasn’t meant to. That sight is burned in my memory for as long as I live. There’s no picture or word, nothing which could convey what it was like to be there in that fleeting, exhausted, cold, dehydrated moment and to feel so suddenly alive. I am amongst friends in the mountains, even when I cannot see a single human around me. M. Collins

Looks like some prime climbing weather for Denali. There was a great article about this route in Alpinist a year or two ago.

Wool down and leather still have their place in mountaineering for sure, not sure all of new high tech textiles are really that much better.

Those picture are awesome!!!!!!!!!

Well, if those pics don't serve as a reminder that the climber is more important than the gear then I don't know what will... How many (on this forum) have questioned a hiker wearing what these guys were wearing? And they were on Denali, not Gray's/Torrey's or Bierstadt. Food for thought!

That's mostly wool clothing, not cotton. Can't say I've ever seen a hiker in that much wool. Wool still out-performs most of the current synthetics that are popular.

I certainly would question someone wearing that much gear up Grays and Torreys, unless it was a winter ascent of one of the more technical routes.
