14ers.com Moved

Postby BillMiddlebrook » Sun Nov 25, 2012 10:10 am

This weekend I moved 14ers.com to a new server at a different hosting company. Worsening technical support, hardware problems and bandwidth limitations forced me to leave the previous hosting company (Verio/NTT) who we used for the past 10 years.

I expect the new location to be faster and more reliable.

As always, if you encounter any problems, please post in the Site Problems sub-forum.

You are very welcome!

I just hope I don't have to move the site again any time soon.

A secure login is once again available on the home page. This allows you to browse 14ers.com with a secure, SSL connection, if you want.

Look for the Image icon on the upper right of the home page. If you don't see it, log off in that area and refresh the page.

Not really a bug, per se, and it's a tiny little thing that doesn't really deserve it's own thread and will affect maybe 1% of users but... the "www." subdomain doesn't appear to be included in the SSL cert, just the literal "14ers.com". My browsers are now making me create certificate exceptions when I visit the site since the new host is automatically redirecting to "www".

Yup, I'm aware of this. I have not yet added "www" to the SSL process. If you just go to "https://14ers.com" do you still have problems? I've been testing with it all day and it seems to be working fine. Maybe I missed some hard-coded urls that you're hitting.

Yes, sir. I'm not surprised since it's a much larger server with a lot more memory and I think the new host company has a more up-to-date datacenter. I also suspect our previous host got sick of 14ers.com traffic and was throttling the 14ers.com bandwidth. They said they weren't, but they could no longer be trusted once they moved tech support to Japan and things went into the toilet.

Maybe they were getting sick of all the threads that ended up getting derailed and going "off-route", and they began thinking
"Man, I'm not going to give them as much bandwith to perpetuate all this crap"
:-k

Nice. I've been doing some load-testing over the past two days and was shocked by how much more traffic this server could handle. \:D/

So, next summer when another national dog story comes up, we should be ready
