I hate it when that happens, and it happens a few times per year. My pack almost never gets unpacked all the way. A few times, I've found two-pound rocks in there that I picked up a few hikes ago.

I've learned that you have to address a few things quickly if you've experienced some rain on your trip. Also, I now force myself to take care of the expensive stuff right when I get home, and deal with the rest as I get around to it.

Tent gets set out to dry (nice tent)
Sleeping bag gets hung up (nice bag)
Move food out of my pack and onto my gear shelf (to be dealt with later)
Camelbak is emptied and dried
Barrier is set up between my cats and said equipment

Everything else is dealt with in it's own time. I have to emphasize the camelbak getting secured right away. There's nothing more annoying (and yet entertaining) then watching your 10 week old kitten make your half-full Camelbak its b***h. There goes $30+.

Oh, right, and generic comment about consuming a beer at every conceivable point along the way. :iluvbeer:

-On top of the mountain
-Back at the bottom of the mountain
-As soon as I roll onto the driveway
-As soon as I get through the door
-During "unpacking"
-etc.

Don't read into that too much, I too enjoy the fine flavors of a tasty adult beverage after a climb. :)

"B" Being from out of state, here's how it's gone so far. Food gets tossed, gear stays in trunk of rental car until next day. I don't even look at it. Then a hot shower, I crack open a cold one and I call home to let all know I survived.

Ceremonial blood letting to appease the mountain gods for the safe passage afforded me. I also like to pour out a 40oz for all my homies who couldn't make it. If there is any time left I usually fall asleep to "Cliffhanger" to help visualize my moves for the next trip.

I used to take every out of the vehicle and put it away. In the past year, things have changed. I usually go hiking every weekend. So now, I keep everything in the SUV. I only bring in the dirty clothes and the food.
You guys have fun climbing this weekend. I can't go. Lumbergh's gonna have me come in on Saturday, I just know it.

First thing I do is log onto 14ers.com or MountainProject or Facebook and spray about how cool the climb was and how much of a badass I was :D

After 5 of the fourteeners I've done, I have had to speed home, run inside my house, grab my soccer gear and run to a soccer tournament or game! Talk about a workout. But I absolutely love it - two of my greatest passions in the same day!

For the rest of the 14ers I call family to let them know I got back safely, dump all my gear and stuff in my room, enjoy a warm shower, relax the rest of the evening, then properly put away my gear the next day.

Since I usually eat a burger and fries at the first restaurant/cafe I can find in the town closest to the 14er, when I get home, I throw all my clothing in the washer, shower and relax or nap. Backpack and gear stays in the car until I need to repack for the next hike or climb.

Three words; "Big City Burrito." I start craving my burrito the second I start up a trail.

Since I am glad to be "home" when I wander back to my campsite (when camping) I usually look for the nearest flowing stream or creek and, depending on the air temperature, sink just my feet in for about 20 minutes, or sometimes the whole entire body, and then a big nap after drying off.
