gps for off-trail hiking

Postby man-U-mike » Fri Nov 23, 2012 3:14 pm

As an avid map & compass hiker/climber, I have avoided GPS arena to date (as technology evolves & gets cheaper!). so now I am considering garmin etrex30 vs oregon vs montana (or others) but would like an impartial users view of them? i have read the reviews on rei website (plus other vendors) and, of course, they are all over the map (bad pun!) and I remain as confused as ever!

So, I would reallly appreciate any feedback/comment from fellow 14ers or a good reference/review to check-out????

I'm in the market myself and found this site helpful.
