RMNP Sunday

Postby DanR » Fri Feb 15, 2013 6:26 am

I'm looking to do some of the lower summits in RMNP on Sunday. Some ideas include Joe Mills/Wuh, East and West Glacier Knobs, or Thunder/Lightning/Emerald but I'm open to other suggestions as well. Please reply or PM if interested. Thanks!

I'm also looking at RMNP this weekend. Wondering about snow depth and the need for snowshoes.

I went up to Pear Lake on Tuesday. The trail was well packed, otherwise snowshoes would probably have been useful. I'm thinking it's a bring snowshoes in the car and decide at the trailhead sort of weekend.

Conditions up in the park (off-trail) have been REALLY sketch. The lower portion of the (old) slope at Hidden Valley slid a few days ago. That's a very benign pitch too. Up in Dragon's Tail, there's a good 4" frozen top-layer sitting on fluff....FLUFF. Not sugar, not sand or even 'gravel'...dry fluff snow. I know you said you'll be on trail but if ya venture off, just be mindful. FYI.

Whaaaaa?!?

Are you talking about right above Trail Ridge road or down in the trees on the old slopes near the warming hut? Neither of those can be any more than 25 degrees.

Joe Mills and Wuh had deep powder a couple weeks ago. Expect a lot of trailbreaking with more fresh snow if you go that way (unless someone made a trench Sat). The northeast slopes of Flattop were slabby snow about a month ago (not enough depth to be an issue at the time, but another foot or so could have tipped it) but the wind scoured much of it - fresh snow could show similar instability. This is above the area the Odessa lake trail crosses before the turn-off for JM.

Anna, Kiefer, and Cougar - thanks for the conditions updates! I may end up aiming for something on the dryer side of things.

Dan,
Not much snow along the eastern edge of the Park. Here's Estes Cone, Lightning, and Thunder from Twin Sisters Mtn earlier today.

Kimo,

did you happen to get a shot of the Chasm Lake area?
I'm looking to head up that way tomorrow and I'd love to leave the snowshoes in the car and take the ice tools out for a stroll.

thx

Hey lurker,

A friend and I went up to the junction for chasm lake and longs. We left the snowshoes in the car and definitely didn't need them. The trail was well trodden and packed down. We wore microspikes until we reached treeline. There is very little snow after treeline.
