Easier Collegiate 14er minus Huron?

Post by Two Headed Boy »

I am going to be taking a couple of flatlanders up in a few days and they want to try a 14er. We will be in the Buena Vista area so I was hoping to get some input on an easier 14er in the Collegiate Range besides Huron (a few people going have already accomplished that one)

Princeton, if you have a high clearance vehicle o drive to the treeline.
Elbert, if you will drive a few extra minutes.

Not sawatch (or collegiate) but you could head to Leadville and hike Sherman from Iowa Gultch. Doesn't get much easier...
I'm slower than Scott P.

i would say La Plata from winfield side (south west)

then Princeton from the towers (average clearance vehicle can actually make it a few switches past the towers with decent pull off for parking in areas)

then Yale

only other to add would be Antero depending on how far up the road you can get

Yale for sure. Class 2, trailhead by the highway.

Elbert? La Plata? Did you hear of any college or university in those names?

Sherman is the least difficult from Leadville. if that's too easy for you guys, then add on Sheridan which is a 13er after you summit Sherman.

Princeton is a pretty unrewarding hike. Yale is much more enjoyable.

Depends on what you mean by easy..from... form a terrain or effort perspective

Belford- Scenic, basically class 1
Yale - Scenic, longer and great trail for almost the entire route and an easy boulder hoping summit ridge that can make you feel like a climber
Harvard - Very Scenic, but longer and a summit fun block that will take 5 minutes of easy scrambling (still class two) that makes a fun end to the hike.

If these are very fit flatlanders without much mountain experience take them to Yale or Harvard, you could have a convert!
If they are not super fit find someone with a jeep (or equivalent) to drive them high up Antero or Princeton, if you can't find a jeep then it is Belford or Sherman.

If they really make you mad and drink all your beer take them on Columbia.....
Not as young as I once was and not as old as I want to be.
