Re: Superstitions
Stood on Weavers Needle and stood inside Miners Needle. Led both. The Supes are amazing! I'm not superstitious though...

Re: Superstitions

no one ever talks about the lost dutchman mine and that big flatiron up behind the park - that is one of the coolest places within 100 miles of phoenix if you ask me.

Re: Superstitions
But did you have any superstitions while hiking up trails like this?
Sorry to burst anyones bubbles. I thought this would be a fun topic and I was genuinely curious to hear of others superstitions, rituals or good luck charms.

Re: Superstitions
More of a habit than a superstition, but I always try to stand on the top rock of a mountain. If it's too intense exposure wise ("Iroquois" in IPW for one), I'll at least sit on the rock. Not really religious, but will generally point up to the Heavens and thank whoever at the summit.

Maybe Stevie had it right and we shouldn’t have superstitions. When you believe in things
That you don't understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain't the way.
I hear you hokiehead.
Also 12ersRule, I also must stand on top and I didn’t bring my good luck charm. See how mad he is? So it all must be in my head. And I say thank you for safe passage often.
Keep on climbing.
I’m trying to get psyched for winter and want to hear more stories. Thanks for chiming in!

Re: Superstitions
It's not technically a superstition but I always wore my favorite patterned Smartwool socks this summer on any climbs that were dangerous or I felt anxious about. The socks were one of the first gifts my girlfriend gave me and have always been sentimental to me. I reasoned that if I were to have an accident she would take a little solace knowing that I had been wearing the socks.blazintoes wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 6:10 am Sorry to burst anyones bubbles. Re: Superstitions
I do similar stuff.TomPierce wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 7:35 am Not really a superstition, but if a knot (harness figure-8) doesn't feel right I completely untie it and do it again from scratch. It might be too long/short a tail, messy angles, whatever. It's rare, pretty sure I could tie that knot with my eyes closed, but it has to feel right in an intangible sense before I launch. And no fiddling to make it right, I untie and do it over from scratch. Rare that I do so, but I have more than once.

One of the things I do that can sometimes get people on my case for waste or whatever is that I will retire gear and throw it away a lot faster than others. Often times after a few days out with a brand new runner I don't instinctively trust it anymore and I will throw it away and pay the 10$ for a brand new one.
Re: Superstitions
Sometimes I pick up trash as a superstitious way to foster goodwill with the mountain
Re: Superstitions
Superstition adjacent, whenever I have a crappy morning getting ready to go to the TH, (car battery dead, upset stomach, stub toe on the ottoman, miss alarm, etc) I always have a good day on the mountain.
Re: Superstitions
I've found horseshoes on hikes a couple times, including one with all the nails (8 not 7 which is good in China), but no noteworthy luck after. Last one was with the "lucky day" free state park pass from the library, so maybe that was related.
