Re: 2022 Goals
Woohoo - declaring victory already for 2022!! It really stank sitting around for a couple months for my knee to heal and then slowly recondition but it paid off because I did Marble Mountain A today with zero knee issues!! (Now altitude issues that was a different story - really felt those 2 months off, but surprisingly didn't affect me as much as I feared - according to GAIA I seem to have still pulled off a respectable 1.3mi/hr moving average after chugging a hot thermos of sea salt caramel hot cocoa mix on the summit to revive me for a much faster descent than what I pulled off coming up).
Now for the rest of the year I'm going to enjoy being list-less. Will still probably have some preference for new peaks/flakes but, for now at least, I'm not really committed to any specific lists or goals - just planning to get out there and enjoy the mountains and perhaps team up with various folks as I do so.
Re: 2022 Goals
Dang. You're really going to try this? It sounds nearly impossible to me, but if you pull it off, much respect
Even a R2R in one day on this route would be really impressive.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: 2022 Goals
One of my climbing partners just did this in November 2021 and he is also a member on here. Not something I would ever want to do, but Eli crushed it. Here is his Strava from the R2R2R.

Re: 2022 Goals
That's on the Kaibab Trail. Impressive, but lots of people do that. zootloipz is proposing doing it on the North and South Bass Trails which would be much, much harder. That route usually takes more than twice as long as the Kaibab. There is no bridge over the river there either so people doing it have to carry packraft (and a life jacket) to do legally. Doing the R2R2R on the Kaibab is not in the same league.climbingcue wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 6:50 amOne of my climbing partners just did this in November 2021 and he is also a member on here. Edit: A single day R2R2R on the Bass has been tried several times, but completed only once. It was done by Peter Bakwin in 16:15. Even Buzz Burrell was unable to complete it. (Edit: out of date; see below).
By contrast the R2R2R on the Kaibab has been done in 5:55:20, which is also impressive.

Anyway, I wish zootloipz the best of luck if he tries it and will be really, really impressed.

Ok, I did not know about that different route. It is pretty crazy what people can do.Scott P wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 7:05 amThat's on the Kaibab Trail. Impressive, but lots of people do that. This record has been overwhelmed by pro runners, and is now down under 12 hours: https://fastestknowntime.com/route/gran ... r2r-alt-az

That's incredibly impressive. I took four days just to do the North Bass and that's when I was in good shape (at least by my standards).

Re: 2022 Goals
What I'd like to see is someone putting up a time for the old "horsethief route" via the Tanner, Beamer, and Nankoweap trails. This used to be much easier before the dams were built, when the Colorado had high and low seasons. I've hiked (and enjoyed) both sides separately, and would do it myself if I were a better swimmer.

Re: 2022 Goals
I’ve hiked both the South Bass and the North Bass a handful of times (each separately), and always as a leisurely hike over several days and never crossing the river. I was on the North Bass in November 2020 and was camped on top of the Redwall when I saw a headlamp coming up the canyon from below me around 6pm (gets dark early that time of year). A short time later, that guy came up past my campsite and we talked for a few minutes. He had running clothes on and a very small daypack. He said he was headed back up to his car at Swamp Point on the rim. I asked how long he had been down in the Canyon. He said he had left from his car early that morning, gone down the North Bass, swam the river, went up the South Bass to the rim, came back down the South Bass, swam the river again and was now headed back up the North Bass to his car. Said he was trying to do the whole thing in under 16 hours. Wow! He then said, “I’m not going to make the 16 hour mark and it’s going to be more like 18 but whatever.” I told him he was an uber human and he laughed and went on his way. And then there was this entry in the registry/journal book at Teddy’s Cabin (Muav Saddle Cabin) on Powell Plateau. Damn crazy Canadians!

Re: 2022 Goals
Klymit's Light Water Dinghy raft is 39 oz., there are light paddles out there as well. It's nothing to use for much river distance (a bit cramped, the arrowhead shape is a bit sluggish for manueverability) but it works well for river crossings. I've used it several times safely on the Yampa. Rolls up like an inflatable sleep pad. Just an idea.seano wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:20 am What I'd like to see is someone putting up a time for the old "horsethief route" via the Tanner, Beamer, and Nankoweap trails. Finish the ranked 13ers including the new LiDAR peaks. That's it. Here's to a year of kicking my own ass.
