Nice, I dig the Talking Heads, especially the older stuff.

Love Petty. That’s a great road to Nowhere - thanks! I can recommend the biography “Petty” by Warren Zanes.

generally speaking i prefer the strangler's older stuff, but their new album has a tribute to long time keyboardest dave greenfield, who passed away last year. the track and the video are quite poignant.

That made my all-time favorite bass songs list.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6pbNj ... rSvZgFAcwQ

The bass is by far my favorite instrument, it makes or breaks a song for me. "Can't get enough" by Bad Company is unlistenable for me just because of it's painful bassline.

Some of these are ridiculously technical, and probably some of them can be played by a beginner. 6 standouts from this list are:

Stanley Clarke - School Days. This is jaw dropping. I've never heard anything like it.
Fascination Street - The Cure. One of my favorite all-time tunes, the bass completely sets the mood.
Mystery Achievement - The Pretenders. Another all-time fave. If I ever were to pick up the bass, this would be one of the first ones I'd try to learn.
Family Affair - Sly and the Family Stone. Sly worked with some monster bassists. He did this one on his own.
Psycho Killer - Talking Heads. I often have this bassline going through my mind when I'm running.
Backwoods - Chili Peppers. Too many great basslines to choose. When I saw them on the Stadium Arcadium tour, this was a highlight for me.

Thanks for sharing that list, David. There are some incredible bass lines in there and some surprises---Holiday in Cambodia, for one. Klaus Flouride doesn't exactly get a lot of recognition, but he and East Bay Ray (guitar) were better musicians than most in punk bands.

I don't have time to read though everything to be sure, but we can't go three years, two months, 19 days and 536 posts without some Butthole Surfers.
This rendition of "Hurdy Gurdy Man" shouldn't be missed. It gives me flashbacks, actually...

Tina Weymouth is a pretty interesting bass player who doesn't seem to get the attention she deserves. So many of those great Heads songs don't work without her vibe.

And I liked some of the Tom Tom Club funk as well.
