Re: Birds: Interesting and Returning
I read somewhere that hummingbirds don't reuse nests year after year. But that is wrong. This is a 3rd generation in this one. First year they fledged and everyone happy. Last year, 3 dead chicks. My guess was heat related, as they are right under a metal roof. I tacked a yoga mat on the car port roof and hose it down on hot days (every day this year) and so far so good.

Wentzl. Thought about you and your first generation hummer nest when thinking about ours. A bucket list item I didn’t know I had on the list. Ohmmm…

A Sharpie! (or maybe Coopers) Glad to see the birds have migrated back to the top for a while.

Re: Birds: Interesting and Returning
I dont have a photo, but I probably saw a golden eagle hunting just east of Cherry Creek mall this morning along the creek. It was brown feathers head to tail. A little to dark and large to be a brown-tail hawk.
I have seen bald eagles in Denver parks before. They expand their hunting range in autumn and winter when their parenting duties are over. (Unless they've birthed a millennial eaglet who never leaves the nest.)

This golden eagle was eating some roadkill along Blue Mesa Reservoir west of Gunnison.

Re: Birds: Interesting and Returning
On the subject of golden eagles, it's incredible how large they are. A few years ago I was hiking through an open forest when one flew out of the tree I was walking under. It scared the crap out of me, partly because of how large its wingspan was. For a moment it looked like a mini dragon was hovering above me, and then it flew off. Very cool once I realized I was not about to be carried away.
