Episodes 1, 2 and 3 are far FAR superior to Episodes 7, 8 and 9 IMO.

Bill can you post a reason and lock this thread for 24 hours before removing it? We just can't imagine why you don't want this on here.

I just re-watched the original Star Trek movies with my kids (14,13,12,10 years). They weren't too impressed. Number 1 is unwatchable, 2 is very good and 3 is junk. From there it's just kind of meh. (okay, 4 was pretty good and actually had some humor) Although they are at a relatively similar release time to Star Wars 4,5,6 the special effects are light years (see what I did there?) behind - looks like something from an SNL skit. Yes, Star Trek my be more cerebral, but there are a lot of cerebral movies that are simply awful. From the standpoint of the original movies, Star Wars wins hand down. I have re-watched those over and over and they never get old. I will probably never watch an old Star Trek movie again.

Personally I think there are good episodes of Star Trek NG and snippets of Star Wars movies that are good. Much of SW, however, seems way too simplistic, just a rehash of the standard good vs. evil plot.

For sci-fans who want to branch out, I really enjoyed the series The Expanse, it was good pandemic binge watching. If ST and SW are beer, The Expanse is a dry martini (but I'm not crazy about the casting of the lead male role; he's eh...OK).

I was at an age when Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were released that I found them magical. Of course I later watched Star Wars and liked it. When the Trilogy VHS set came out, (before Lucas botched them up with digital “enhancements”), I watched them many times, and in my mind nothing will ever touch those three. The Star Trek TV series gets some points for campiness and Shatner's acting, but after that the genre drops off in a hurry for me.

I missed this whole thread, but discovered it when I looked to see how redundant my idea for a new thread would be.

We have books living on, we have music going strong, where is the thread on movies?

Dune.

Best sci-fi book, all time, now with a spectacular cast and the right director. BOOM.

I stole a nearly worn out original copy of dune from my uncle in the 80s and have probably read it 10 more times. The sequels and then Herbert s sons prequels didn't do it the same way for me, but I've probably got around 15 of those various Duniverse books in storage somewhere.

Still have my 1965 copy. Either got it off one of my parents or picked it up used - can't remember - but I read it the first time in middle school.

Maybe I can connect some dots and make the subject of this thread a little more relevant to this site:

- The author of those later Dune books by Herbert's son were co-written with Kevin J. Anderson, who lives in Monument, I believe.
- Anderson is an avid hiker. I met him at an author's event and he just wanted to talk to me about hiking trails (he bought one of my books).
- I *think* he's done some 14ers, but I can't remember for sure.
- He asked me if I take verbal notes when I hike by talking and recording myself (I do not, I write everything down).
- He said that this is how he writes his novels: he hikes around Colorado, narrating the stories that are in his head and recording them, then writing from the transcriptions.
- Anderson also wrote a lot of Star Wars books.
- He's also co-written books with Rush's Neil Peart, which might make him even more relevant to this site.

That's all I got.
