Re: offtopic - movies
Anything on the IMDB Top 100 is obvious.
A Man for All Seasons (1966) - film adaptation of Robert Bolt's 1960 play with a phenomenal performance by the lead, Paul Scofield, portraying Sir Thomas More during the English Reformation.
Mulholland Drive (2001) - James Lynch. More mainstream.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) - Stanley Kubrick. A must-watch (#66 on IMDB's top 100, but I would feel remiss not to mention it).
Valhalla Rising (2009) - Nicolas Winding Refn. Gritty, gory, weird.
No Country for Old Men (2007) - Coen Bros. Because I can't resist and it's one of my favorites.
There Will Be Blood (2007) - Paul Thomas Anderson. Also can't resist.
Fun fact: Both the Coen Bros and Paul Thomas Anderson were shooting in Marfa, TX at the same time. When PTA lit the oil derrick on fire, the smoke was so thick that the Coen Bros had to shut down production for the day. Power move.
