2021 Goals

It was both serious and a bit of meta-snark, but more the former. I've gotten about 700 pages into it two times now and gotten bored? Frustrated? Overwhelmed? I'm not even sure the right combination of adjectives to describe what a behemoth Infinite Jest is. I find it incredibly entertaining but it's just so damn dense. I'd love to actually finish it and see how DFW ties everything together, but man, it's One Hell of a Book.

If you mean the endnotes (I suppose it might depend on printing), of course! It wouldn't quite be the same book without them. I'm sure there's some twist with the eponymous film-in-the-book but I haven't quite gotten far enough to reach it yet. The book twists and turns enough that I have no idea what you could be referencing (aside from the uh... effect the film has on people), so nothing spoiled!

I've been to it maybe...6 times? A tough, complex beast that has thwarted a half dozen climbers that I know of. It'd be relatively easy to get up it by butchering it with drilled bolts & aid, but it's in a wilderness area so that's not allowed. True, it's not high but I've long since concluded that the alpine stuff is relatively easier, not nearly as challenging as the sub-alpine: there's water absolutely everywhere, moderate temps, usually developed trails (sometimes even with signs!), easy navigation once above treeline, and you're usually climbing on solid granite. I guess I've grown enamored of the challenge and misery of the less popular stuff. Just my opinions.

I've been to it maybe...6 times? A tough, complex beast that has thwarted a half dozen climbers that I know of. It'd be relatively easy to get up it by butchering it with drilled bolts & aid, but it's in a wilderness area so that's not allowed.

I've been bagging blobs and random peaks in Mesa County since last week and noticed that it has zero ascents on LoJ, one of the few ranked Class 5 peaks remaining in the state without an ascent, if not the only one. With your goal being a Class 5 desert peak, possibly without an ascent, I figured that had to be it. I can't tell based just on the photos Erik Packard has uploaded, but it looks nigh unclimbable without bolts and aid, since it's just smooth walls all the way around it. I'd like to go back there myself and just circumnavigate the thing because as far as desert peaks goes it's a real looker. I doubt its secrets will ever be within my grasp, so simply taking it in visually will be enough.

I haven't done a ton outside of the high peaks, but I've noticed this to at least some degree on the smaller, desert peaks I've climbed. The bushwhacks alone one some of them are awful! Throw in various other environmental factors, plus often garbage rock (or literally just climbing solidified mud), and it's nothing like the alpine yet oddly similar, in a way. They're both unique yet share similarities, and sometimes the little guys can be so much more than the big ones!

I was at peak 5700 about a month ago and scouted out some possible routes, but they appeared too hard for me, even if someone else led (then again, I'm not that great of a climber). The rock is pretty soft for wingate too.

Of note, there are some nice dinosaur tracks near the peak. They are probably the best ones I have seen in Colorado.

1) Backcountry Skiing -AIARE 1 for January 11th. I got my touring gear and I've been going face first into understanding avalanches and listening to those who've been around them. I really want to ski Culebra this year. I'm hoping to spend lots of time on bumps and trees inbounds and develop my skills a lot. I'm a decent skier now - I would like to transition more towards expert

2) Finish my 14ers - only 2 left + going back to LB for the last traverse. I'm hoping to finish with a sunset summit on Huron the day after grabbing the Apostles

3) Finish all but the 3 most difficult centennials. It looks like the logistics in the San Juans could be most difficult. Wham Ridge and Jagged would be really cool to do.

4) Start my journey on learning trad - hopefully find some good partners and get stronger. In 2020 I haven't been able to get into the gym so I'm not a great rock climber. My ultimate goal is to eventually get into ski mountaneering so I'm thinking about how to develop those skills gradually.

5) Whatever looks cool! I would love an opportunity on the Atlantic - Drift traverse. Always looking to make new friends
