Time to review 2021...
headsizeburrito wrote: Thu Dec 03, 2020 10:26 pm New transplant to CO so have a lot to do/figure out.

1. Get a basic handle on the geography of the state (ranges, major peaks, major routes, etc) Sort of, I did put a state map on the wall so that counts for something I guess!
2. Do some more 14ers. Other than Longs no real specific goals here, probably just hit whatever looks interesting and/or convenient. Got the Front Range 14ers and a couple others done, time to start expanding my travel radius a bit.
3. Join a climbing gym (not until after getting a good COVID vaccine) to work on basic skills to improve my class 3 and above safety and endurance. Nope, still interested but haven't prioritized it.
4. Do some of the classic ridges (Sawtooth/Tour D'Abyss, Kelso, Ellingwood, etc) At least did Tour D'Abyss, but nothing else of note here.
5. Spend lots of time off trail/scrambling Pretty satisfied with hitting this goal!
6. When safe to travel, hopefully get back to SoCal in the fall for an unfinished project, a double ascent of San Jacinto via two off trail routes. Nope, too may other things to deal with. Still thinking about it. Maybe 2022?
7. Make some attempt to overcome my asocial tendencies and get out with other people to learn from them and dip a toe into the real world community instead of just the online side. Did a couple hikes with justiner, meeting one person counts right?
8. Maybe run a 100 miler. Nope, kept busy trail running for fitness but more focused on hiking/off trail stuff.

1. Stay Healthy- Mostly a success. Had a weird respiratory infection (non-Covid, at least I think) in late September that dragged on into October. Otherwise, felt good.
2. Get a haircut- Yeah, finally after about 16 months. I kind of miss the long hair though.
3. Keep monthly 13er+ summit streak alive (currently 55 months)- The streak lives, 67 months.
4. Reach 200 ranked 13ers (currently 172)- Success- now at 204 ranked 13ers (pre-Lidar changes)
5. Reach 130/202 on the Cent/Bicents (currently 118)- 132/202 pre Lidar changes (I guess I need to redo Buckskin but can't quite make myself remove the checkmark).
6. A 5th class 13er (Probably Coxcomb)- Coxcomb success in August.
7. Repeat K.C. with partners- Yes!
8. Something in the Wemis- Did RGP/Window and the couple peaks on the other side of RGP. Didn't visit the more Wemi-like areas of the Wemi.
9. At least 6 new ranked 13er/14er snowflakes to put me at 35 combined- Not a lot of new snowflakes, managed only 4 to get to 33 combined.
Here are my 2021 results. Overall pretty successful year.
Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.

Hike on 60 days this calendar year – Hiked 138 days
Hike/walk/run/treadmill 2021 miles - 2800+ miles
Hike/walk/run/treadmill elevation gain of 1 million feet - 1,358,154’ elevation gained
Summit a combined total of 10 winter 13/14ers - Summited 15 winter 13er/14ers
Finish the Bicentennials - Done! Woot!
Summit 3 new state highpoints outside of Colorado - Done: KS – ND – SD – NE - AZ
Summit 3 new El Paso County Highpoints - Done
Hike another section of the Colorado Trail - Done (Section 4)
Keep my average above 10+ miles and 4000’+ of elevation gain per hike - Done
Take my turkey on a midnight hike through the neighborhood and to the park after it snows so the kids can wonder where the ‘velociraptor’ tracks came from in the morning. Didn’t happen: I broke up with my boyfriend shortly after posting this, and he was housing the turkey :/ But, the added free time allowed me to summit 170 peaks this year, so I’m considering it a win.
It's a mountain: get over it.

Well, I won 2021. I'm currently considered 'stable'. :-D

I managed to log more than 600 miles on my mtb, mostly on GM and BCLP. I hiked one 13er, and turned back twice on another.
(2020 was the first time in 40 years I didn't hike at least one peak over 13k)

I spent a week on the beach in Mexico. \:D/

Eli Watson wrote: Wed Dec 02, 2020 9:11 am 1. Continue to challenge myself with big days in the mountains.
2. At least two winter 14er / 13er ascents.
3. Spring couloirs (Hagerman via Hagar's Way, Sneffles Snake Couloir anyone?).
4. At least one out-of-state 14er / 13er ascent.
5. Break 22 hr on the Crestone Centennial Circuit (see #1).
6. Get even more better at jumping bikes, specifically doubles.
7. Race, preferably bikes.
8. Get a 'good' job.
9. Move away from Fort Collins, unless that interferes with #8.
10. Desert szn (bonus points if combined with #1 and #4 - maybe Badwater to Whitney duathlon?).
11. Limit distractions.
12. Continue to foster a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
13. Stay nicotine free.
2021 was mostly a rebuilding year for me. I got a big boy job in Fort Collins which is awesome, but that meant new routines and new availability to train and go outdoors on weekends only, which definitely changes the travel times and motivation. I pissed off my achilles in January 2021 through a combination of over-training with insufficient recovery and stretching so that sidelined my running schedule for a couple months. Then after starting the new job I was focusing more on maintaining my work routine than trying to do too much outside of work while I was getting comfortable with the new position.

1. Eh, I'm not sure how to answer. I try to plan out at least one really big day in the mountains (somewhere on the scale of > 24 hr ideally), which did not happen. I didn't hone in on anything in Colorado and then make time to train for it and execute. I did make a couple attempts at tagging a bunch of peaks in the Missouri Gulch area in one go, but didn't execute properly so it's on the list for next year. I didn't put in the vertical and mountain miles in the spring to be ready for an attempt at lowering my Crestone Centennial Circuit PR, nor anything else of that kind of scale. I definitely put in some larger-than-average days in the mountains including Hagerman from the TH, Apostles Traverse from 2WD, and some long Missouri Gulch scouting, but it was a bit too little too late. I did run / hike R2R2R in 13 hr over Thanksgiving week, but that's a canyon and while it was indeed my longest day mile-wise on my feet, it was nowhere near my biggest days in vert or duration. So I'm going to say 13 hr R2R2R was a fantastic achievement that I'm proud of, but I can do better. No.
2. No, but not for lack of trying. My only successful snowflake was Elbert in February, and some half-baked attempts at Shavano and DeCaLiBro. I tried to sneak up Humboldt in between avalanche dangers days in December, but that was one of our high wind days.
3. Yes! Sayres BM X-Rated Couloir 2021-04-17, Torreys Emperor Couloir 2021-06-05, Hagerman via Hagar's Way 2021-06-27.
4. No.
5. No, didn't even attempt it. See 1.
6. Didn't spend a lot of time on the bike this year, gonna say No.
7. No.
8. Yes!
9. I work in Fort Collins, so I get to bike to work everyday. N/A
10. Yes! Had an excellent Thanksgiving in Arizona and New Mexico. R2R2R in 13 hr 2021-11-22 on an absolutely perfect day.
11. I'm gonna have to say No. Despite my attention to this goal, I let myself get caught up in a lot of distractions especially in spring and fall of multiple varieties, including electronic & romantic, that proved to be fruitless uses of effort and time.
12. It's a work in progress. I can definitely point to areas of improvement, but I haven't stopped paying attention to certain practices or behaviors. We still compost at home, and I'm leading an initiative to get my office composting as well as an example. Of the 201 days I've gone to work in 2021, I've commuted by bike for 132 of them (66%). Hoping to increase that percentage in 2022. Yes.
13. 3.5 years and counting as of 2021-12-18, Yes.
