If nobody responds the thread will die - please?
Have you considered simply not opening the thread? Much easier to control your own life than to expect the world to accommodate you. Alternatively, you can put the eye mask on so as to not be exposed to thoughtcrime.

I thought we were following the science here?
Dunno about that, lot of people are following lots of different truths on this forum. But even by the most liberal of definitions ("Truth is what your contemporaries let you get away with saying" - Richard Rorty), you are not gaining much traction here.

We live in a post-truth society, where only the narrative matters. Here's NPR claiming a downward-trending 7-day average is "accelerating" and a new all time high is "peaked".

Here's CNN changing their tune between Jan 19th and Jan 20th, where suddenly we went from "the new covid variant is gonna kill us all" to "just kidding, the vaccine works on it too". I wonder what changed within those 24 hours?

Doesn't seem like this much different than what was expected before (masks outdoors when 6' can't be maintained). Difference being Biden is pretending he cares where the Donald just didn't (as in he promoted personal choice). Not politicizing, but when you virtue signal, you have to back that up and understand people are always watching (Newsom, Hancock, Adler, Biden, Pelosi, etc). Hard to continue to take all this seriously when you have assclowns like the ones mentioned constantly defying their own dumbass mandates.

The headline doesn't say, "the new covid variant is gonna kill us all", it says, "Variant might partially evade protection from vaccines or prior infection, early research suggests". Notice the keywords, "might", "partially" "early research"? That's hardly fearmongering.

If you followed up the headline and read the story, it's in the first sentence,
New research out this week provides reassuring evidence that people vaccinated against coronavirus will be protected against emerging new variants of the virus.
here are the two articles in question:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/19/health/c ... index.html

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/20/health/c ... index.html

They're two separate articles, not an update on the first.

Here's the two papers in question, cited by each article, respectively:

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 8.427166v1

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101 ... 5.426911v1

Notice the publish date on both of these: Jan 19, 2021. So by "earlier this week" what they really meant was "published yesterday, at the same time as the doom paper we wrote an article about"

I noticed you had nothing to say about NPR's spin. Any calc 1 students care to point to the acceleration on the graph?

And one was reported about first, then the other. Your beef is with the editor of CNN's site for not being able to do two things at once?

From the 2nd graph of the NPR Article on surge peaking as you point to a death graph:
"While another surge remains possible, especially with new, more infectious variants on the horizon, the number of new daily infections in the current wave appears to have hit a high in the past week or two and has been steadily declining in most states since, the researchers say."

Here's the cases graph. Where's the acceleration discussed on Jan 19? What magically changed in the narrative in those 2 days? The data doesn't support any change in reality.

My beef is the incredibly obvious about-face on coverage at a mysteriously coincidental time.

Need more examples?

Yesterday, the WHO decreed that PCR cycle thresholds should be reduced to eliminate false positives, and cases should only be counted with a positive test AND clinical presentation OR a second test.

How dare I spread conspiracy theories of posting data contradicting what the media says!

Hey anyone remember when I was posting that the IFR wasn't in fact 3%?

420,000 dead by the end of today. Many, for no reason other than negligence. Half a million by this time next month. It's just the flu.
